About this sheet

Six picture sums make subtraction easy to see. In each row, some of the pictures are crossed out: the apples, stars, balloons, fish, cupcakes and strawberries that have been taken away. Children count the ones that are left and write the answer in the box. Every sum stays within 10, so it suits children aged 5–7 who are just starting to take away. Encourage them to say the whole sum out loud, for example five apples take away two leaves three, and then try writing it with numbers underneath. Once the answers are in, the pictures are ready to color. The answers are 3, 3, 3, 2, 3 and 6. Print on plain A4 and work in pencil. For more practice on screen, play Math Race, choose taking away, and every right answer speeds the koala's kart ahead.
