About these games

Our picks and what they practise

Arcade games are the ones children ask for by name — Snake, Paddle Ball, Flying Galah, Brick Breaker, the falling-blocks game, the dot-munching maze. Ours are the same ideas, drawn for kids and with the edges filed off: a slow mode on Snake, a computer opponent on Paddle Ball that does not crush you, no lives-for-money, no pop-ups between rounds. Most are one-touch or one-swipe, so a five-year-old can play the same game as a ten-year-old, just with a lower score.

There are more than 20 games on this page, so use the ages on the tiles. Fruit Catcher, Whack-a-Mole and Balloon Pop are the youngest; Snake, Flying Galah, Fruit Slicer and Stack Tower are the middle; Block Drop, Bumper Boats, Brick Breaker and the sports games suit older children who want something to get good at. A round of any of them is a minute or two, which is the point.

Our picks

What they practise

  • Reaction time and hand–eye coordination
  • Timing — when to jump, flap, swing or slice
  • Steering and stopping with small, quick inputs
  • Persistence: trying again after a short round, and beating your own score
  • Taking turns and fair play in the two-player games (Paddle Ball, Air Hockey, Bumper Boats)

Questions parents ask

4 quick answers

Which arcade games are good for a five-year-old?

Fruit Catcher, Whack-a-Mole and Balloon Pop — one tap or one drag, no reading, no time pressure.

Are these the real Snake, Paddle Ball and Block Drop?

They are our own versions of the same ideas, built for kids: same rules, gentler pace, no pop-ups. Block Drop is the falling-blocks game; Dot Dash is the maze one.

Do they work on an iPad or phone?

Yes. Every game has touch controls; on a computer the arrow keys and space bar work too.

Is there anything to buy?

No — no pop-ups, no sign-up, and no lives or power-ups to buy.
