About this sheet

Six picture sums, each made of apples: count the apples on one side of the plus sign, count the ones on the other side, and write the total in the box. All the answers stay under ten, so children aged 5–7 can work them out by counting, and the pictures let them see what adding really means. Encourage your child to count on from the bigger group instead of starting again from one, which is the first real adding skill. A cheeky apple gives a thumbs up at the top, and there is a line for a name. Print on A4 and work in pencil. If they enjoy it, our Number Bonds game shows how two small numbers make a bigger one, with counters to drag and count.
