How to play

1

Tap between two dots to draw a line.

2

Draw the fourth side of a box to win it, then you go again.

3

Win the most boxes to win the game.

TipLook for boxes with three sides: they glow gold, so take them! Try not to draw the third side of a box, because then Fox can close it. When only risky lines are left, give away the fewest boxes you can.

Dots and Boxes is the classic pencil-and-paper game, played online with Fox. Take turns drawing a line between two dots. Whoever draws the fourth side of a box wins it, fills it with a sticker and goes again. The player with the most boxes wins. It starts on a tiny board with just four boxes, so five-year-olds can learn it in a minute, then the boards grow one level at a time. Lines that would close a box glow gold, and from Level 5 lines that would hand Fox a box glow orange, so children learn to think one move ahead. Later levels add star boxes worth two and boards with odd shapes, up to the Big Board finale. Every level won adds a new sticker set, from fruit to space. After the first game, two children can play each other on one screen. The game was first written down in France in 1889.
