Mini Chess teaches chess to young children one piece at a time, hosted by Lion, a kind lion cub in a golden crown and a red cape who talks you through every move. There is only one thing to learn: tap a piece, then tap the square where it goes. The squares it can reach light up, so small hands always know where to tap. The board is small, five squares across at first, and the first levels are star puzzles: move the piece to collect every star. Each level brings one new piece and one new idea. The Rook goes in straight lines, the Bishop slides on the diagonals, the Queen does both, the King takes one small step and the Knight jumps in an L shape. Then the Pawns race to the far side, you land on Lion's sleepy pieces to take them, learn to stay off the red dots where his pieces could take yours, play a mini battle with pawns and a Knight, and finally catch his King. A wrong tap only bumps gently, and after two bumps the next move glows. Levels move from a castle garden to a treetop fort and a royal hall, every level wins a new piece style, and between levels there is a true chess fact. After Level 10 the levels come round again.
