About this sheet
Eight pictures, each with an empty box underneath: a sun, a ball, a cat, a dog, a fish, a hat, the moon and a tree. Children say the word out loud, listen for the very first sound, and write that letter in the box. It's a core early phonics skill for ages 5–7, because hearing the first sound in a word is the first step to spelling it. Stretch the sound when you say it together: "sss-un", "mmm-oon". If writing a letter is new, say it and let your child point to it on an alphabet chart first. The pictures can be colored afterwards. Print on plain A4 and use a pencil. On screen, our Phonics Match game has Galah the bird saying the sounds for children to match.
