About these games

Our picks and what they practise

Car games are the classic first arcade games, and they are mostly about one thing: steering. Koala Kart does the accelerating for you so a five-year-old only has to steer; Chicken Crossing is about timing a chick's hops across the road, and the cars always stop and toot. None of them are long — a race is three laps, a crossing is one chick.

One of the games is a puzzle wearing a car costume: Unblock the Car, the sliding-block classic where cars only move the way they point.

Our picks

What they practise

  • Steering and stopping — control of a moving thing with small inputs
  • Timing gaps in traffic (Chicken Crossing)
  • Spatial reasoning and planning moves ahead in Unblock the Car

5 quick answers

What are good free car games for kids online?

Car Wash, Car Parking, Truck Driver and Little Tractor are all free on Tiny Players, made for ages 4 to 10. Scrub and rinse muddy cars, park in the right spot, drive a truck over the hills, or plow and sow the farm in a little tractor. They play in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no sign-up, no chat, no pop-ups and nothing to buy.

Which car game is easiest for a five-year-old?

Koala Kart — it accelerates by itself and only asks the child to steer. Chicken Crossing is the next step.

Do they need a keyboard?

No. Every game has touch controls for tablets and phones; on a computer the arrow keys work too.

Is Unblock the Car hard?

It starts easy and adds more cars gradually — the sliding-block classic, no reading needed.

Is there anything to buy?

No. Every car game is free, with nothing to buy, no pop-ups, no sign-up and no chat.
