About these games

Our picks and what they practise

Handwriting starts long before letters: it starts with control. Trace Shapes is for three- and four-year-olds who are still learning to steer a finger along a path — zigzags, waves, loops. Trace the Alphabet and Number Tracing come next, one letter or number at a time with the stroke order shown, lower case before capitals.

The second half of the page is writing in the other sense: putting words together to make something. Story Builder lets a child pick who, where and what, and watch the sentence build itself. A tablet with a finger or a stylus is the right device for the tracing games; the rest work anywhere.

Questions parents ask

4 quick answers

Does tracing on a screen help real handwriting?

It helps with the shape and stroke order, which is most of the battle. Pair it with the printable tracing sheets for the pencil part.

What age do the tracing games suit?

Trace Shapes from about three; the alphabet and numbers from four; lowercase from five.

Do they work with a stylus?

Yes — any stylus or a finger on an iPad or Android tablet. On a computer the mouse works but is less natural.

Is there anything to buy?

No — every game and the matching printables, no pop-ups, no sign-up.
