How to play

1

Drag the magnet over the thing on the bench, or move it with the arrow keys.

2

Iron and steel zip up and stick; everything else stays put.

3

From stage two, guess first: tap Sticks or No stick, then test it.

4

Bar magnets: tap one to flip it, then slide it across. North and south stick; the same ends push apart.

5

Maze and water: move the magnet slowly and the ball or the clips follow it.

TipNot every metal is magnetic. A fridge door is steel, so a magnet sticks; a drink can is aluminium, so it does not. Try it at home with a fridge magnet afterwards.

Magnet Lab is hands-on magnet science with Platypus, the lab scientist in goggles. Drag the big horseshoe magnet over everyday things: the steel paper clip zips up and sticks with a clink, the wooden block stays put, and each one drops into the Sticks or No stick tray. A friendly voice says what every thing is made of, because that is the science: magnets pull iron and steel, and not every metal. The aluminium can, the brass key and the gold ring all stay put. Then guess before you test, flip two bar magnets so north meets south (the same ends push apart), sort look-alike metals in a floaty space station, pull a steel ball through a maze from under the board, and fish paper clips out of a glass of water without getting the magnet wet. There is nothing to lose: no hearts and no clock. Every stage cleared wins a new magnet colour. It suits ages four to ten: little ones love the clink, and older children learn why.
