About these games
Our picks and what they practise
›
Card games teach matching, counting and turn-taking without anyone noticing, and they are the games families already know. Snap and Go Fish are the first, from four; Dominoes and Bingo from six. Snakes & Ladders brings a real die to roll and race around the board.
Dominoes doubles as counting practice — matching dots to dots is the same skill as adding them up — and Bingo trains listening for a called picture or number under friendly pressure. The computer plays fairly, and Snakes & Ladders has a two-player mode on one screen.
Our picks
Snap! — when two cards in a row match, tap SNAP before the computer — from age four
Go Fish — ask the computer for cards and collect pairs
Bingo — find the called picture or number on your card — three in a row wins
Dominoes — match the numbers on the ends of the line
Snakes & Ladders — roll the die, climb the ladders, slide down the snakes — race a friend or the computer
What they practise
- Matching and number recognition
- Counting and adding (Dominoes)
- Listening for a called number (Bingo)
- Turn-taking and fair play

Which suit a four-year-old?
Snap — flip and match, pure luck, no counting yet. Go Fish is the next step from about five.
Can we play against each other?
Snakes & Ladders has a two-player mode on one screen. The others are played against a fair computer, one card or roll at a time.
Is there anything to buy?
No — no pop-ups, no sign-up and nothing to buy.
Do they work on an iPad?
Yes. Every game runs in the browser with touch; on a computer the keyboard works too.
