Essay on Diwali in 100 words
For class 1 to 3Diwali is the festival of lights. It is one of the biggest festivals in India, and families all over the world celebrate it too. It comes in October or November every year.
Before Diwali, we clean our homes and decorate them. We make a colourful rangoli at the door and light rows of small clay lamps called diyas. In the evening, families pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
We wear new clothes, share sweets and give gifts to friends and neighbours. Diwali reminds us that light always wins over darkness. I love Diwali because my whole family is together.
Essay on Diwali in English
For class 4 to 6Diwali, also called Deepawali, is the festival of lights. The word Deepawali means a row of lamps. Hindus, Sikhs and Jains celebrate it in India and in many other countries. It falls on the new moon night of the month of Kartik, which comes in October or November.
Many people celebrate Diwali to remember the day Lord Rama came home to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana after fourteen years away. The people of Ayodhya lit rows of diyas to welcome them. Families also pray to Goddess Lakshmi, who brings wealth and good fortune, and to Lord Ganesha. Sikhs mark Bandi Chhor Divas at the same time, and Jains remember Lord Mahavira.
The festival usually lasts five days, from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. People clean and decorate their homes, draw rangoli at the door, hang lanterns and light diyas. They wear new clothes, share sweets such as laddus and barfi, give gifts and visit their relatives.
Today many families choose a green Diwali. They use clay diyas, make rangoli with flowers and natural colours, and burst fewer crackers or none at all. This keeps the air clean and is kinder to animals and older people.
Diwali teaches us that light wins over darkness and good wins over evil. It brings families and neighbours together, and that is why it is my favourite festival.
